Pre & Post Op Instructions

The Day Before Surgery

  • Please do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the evening before your surgery.
  • If you are taking medications for high blood pressure, diabetes or nervous disorders, tell your surgeon and the pre-op nurse for additional instructions.
  • Medications and anesthesia may be harmful to a fetus, especially in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. If there is the possibility of pregnancy, please notify your surgeon prior to surgery.
  • Notify your surgeon of any changes in your health or if you have been exposed to any communicable diseases.
  • Please do not drink alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior to your surgery.
  • Smoking before or after surgery may be detrimental to your recovery.

The Morning of Surgery

  • You should arrive at the Center at least one hour prior to the scheduled surgery time.
  • Bring your photo ID and insurance card.
  • Bathe the morning of surgery; if you shampoo your hair, make sure it is dry and do not use hairspray.
  • Do not wear makeup, lipstick or nail polish.
  • Wear loose fitting, casual clothing that can be easily removed.
  • Do not wear any jewelry, contact lenses, or bring other valuables to the Center.
  • Bring a list of all prescriptions and/or over-the-counter medications you are currently taking; include dosage information.
  • Bring a list of known allergies.

Following the Surgery

  • You must have a responsible adult take you home and stay with you following surgery.
  • Do not drive, sign important papers or make critical decisions for at least 24 hours.
  • Do not operate machinery, power tools, etc. for at least 24 hours.
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours.
  • Smoking after surgery may be detrimental to your recovery.
  • Your surgeon will provide you with post-operative instructions regarding diet, rest and medication.
  • In the event you should have any unexpected post-operative complication such as uncontrolled bleeding or high fever, please contact your doctor immediately or proceed to the nearest emergency care facility.
  • If you experience an allergic reaction to your medication, stop taking it and contact your doctor immediately or proceed to the nearest emergency care facility.
  • A representative of the Center will contact you a day or two after surgery to ask about your progress.

Special Instructions for Children

  • Bring a current immunization record.
  • A parent/guardian must remain in the facility at all times.

Special Note for Family and Friends

  • You may want to bring a light jacket, the waiting areas can be cool.
